Skillset Studio: The nonprofit executive simulator

The context

Many young professionals who see their future in the nonprofit and international social sector have not acquired formal education or practical experience in the fundamentals of management in general, and nonprofit management in particular.

The challenge

How do you equip early-career professionals in civil society with the essential foundations of nonprofit management, quickly, effectively, and in a way that is engaging and memorable?

Our process

We convened an international cohort of young professionals from diverse countries, for an intensive management simulation exercise developed by Gigajoule. Over the course of four days, participants stepped into senior roles on the executive team of our bespoke nonprofit, where they explored the responsibilities of executive leadership, engaged in complex decision-making processes, and collaborated with fellow "executives" on real-time organizational challenges. They navigated core domains of nonprofit management, including strategy development, budgeting, workforce management, external relations, and fundraising. In the capstone exercise, each team presented the organization to a philanthropic foundation, making a compelling case for multi-year funding. We played along, too, as the organization's board of directors.

The result

By the end of the simulation, participants reported a significant increase in understanding, practical skills, and confidence in their ability to take on future management roles. Within the space of just a few days they gained valuable hands-on experience in executive decision-making, while remaining deeply engaged and "in character" throughout. The immersive, experiential format turned abstract concepts into lived practice, creating a one-of-a-kind high-impact learning opportunity, grounded in rigor, best practices, and fun.
