Foundational Focus:A Vision-Mission-Values Clinic

The Context
A mid-sized nonprofit had always been driven by a deep, shared belief in the significance of its mission, but that belief had never been written down. As the organization grew quickly, the unwritten code that once held teams together was no longer as obvious as it once was. Departmental tasks started to feel "non-aligned" with one another, and without a documented mission or values, there was no shared language to reconcile them. A new executive director saw an opportunity to change that.
The Challenge
How do you take what has always been felt but never articulated explicitly, and turn it into a clear, written vision, mission, and set of values that the entire organization can identify with and stand behind?
Our Process
We brought together the organization's full staff for a day of collaborative work. Employees began by individually mapping their personal and professional values, then layered these onto shared diagrams to surface where personal conviction and organizational purpose overlapped. These areas of agreement became the raw material for a list of core organizational values. In parallel, small teams worked independently to draft vision and mission statements, wrestling directly with the tensions between the organization's varied responsibilities. Each team's draft was shared, compared, and refined together.
The Result
By the end of the day, the group had produced a robust draft of the organization's vision and mission, along with a clear, agreed-upon set of values, turning years of implicit understanding into an explicit foundation. The director used the team's work as the backbone of the final statement, tweaking language while preserving the substance the staff had built together. Just as importantly, the process itself modeled the kind of open, cross-team collaboration the director wanted to see more of going forward.
