Transformation in Toronto:
Empowering medical leaders for Israel’s northern frontier

The Context

The Israel Ministry of Health established the Ilanot Galilee program to address regional health disparities by cultivating a network of high-caliber physicians dedicated to serving Israel's northern frontier. The inaugural cohort of medical graduates embarked on a capstone experience to hone their commitment to this geographically and culturally diverse region.

The Challenge

Can emerging physicians be inspired to view practicing medicine in rural areas not as a career compromise, but as a unique engine for social impact, professional initiative, and leadership opportunity?

Our Process

We designed and led a study expedition to Toronto, Canada. Why Toronto? Because of its unique blend of universal healthcare challenges, immense cultural diversity, rural communities, and world-class health leadership. We visited hospitals, training facilities, regulatory agencies, research institutes, and academic institutions. Most importantly, we spent time talking to senior health leaders, who shared their personal stories of values-based health leadership, and told us how working among underserved populations was an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional development.

The Result

By the end of our immersive study expedition, our delegates came to realize that practicing in the north of Israel offers a level of clinical diversity, community connection and opportunity for influence and innovation that is often impossible to achieve in large urban centers. The senior health leaders who met with us shared some very important guidance: if you want to become a leader in health care, be humble, take pride in your service, embrace opportunity, and care deeply for the people you lead. Our delegates are now serving in their own communities. But they’re not just doctors anymore; they’re ambassadors for the north, with a cohesive peer support network, and a global perspective on local challenges.
